....The school board also discussed and approved paying for a new math curriculum for the elementary level, which the elementary math teachers recommended. Connecting Math Concepts curriculum will replace Everyday Math Concepts.
“There’s unity in the decision,” superintendent Calton said of the math teachers’ recommendation. The new curriculum was piloted in the first, fourth and fifth grades this past year, she said, and there are too many discrepancies and holes in the Everyday Math that we were teaching.
“The staff is really interested in trying to shore this up,” Calton said, “because we don’t want to admire this problem. We want to attack it and we want to make sure we’re doing the best that we can for our students.”
The board also unanimously approved the hiring of Mary Wilson as head school cook to replace retiring head cook, Barb Stanley.
The board is also arranging a brief special meeting to approve the hiring of a new Industrial Arts teacher, as yet unnamed.
Terry Falcon, principal for grades 7-12, announced the drivers education class begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 7, and runs through the entire month. A mandatory parents’ meeting is at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on July 7. The parents have the option for what meeting they’ll attend.
